Prime Minister Balendra Shah has stated that he wants to improve the economy with the support of the private sector. In a meeting held on Wednesday with representatives from the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Confederation of Nepalese Industries, and Chamber of Commerce, Prime Minister Shah expressed his commitment to economic reform in collaboration with the private sector.
The meeting between the private sector and the Prime Minister has just concluded. According to Federation President Anjan Shrestha, the hour-and-a-half-long meeting included open discussions on issues facing the private sector, the current state of the economy, and possible solutions.
“The Prime Minister said he wants to put the private sector in the driver’s seat of the economy to address existing problems. For this, there is a commitment to resolve all issues facing the private sector,” President Shrestha said. During the meeting, business representatives also raised concerns about some industrialists and entrepreneurs being held in custody, the private sector being in a state of fear, and a lack of confidence. In response, President Shrestha said that Prime Minister Shah explained that although some industrialists and entrepreneurs are under investigation based on allegations of wrongdoing, the government remains positive toward the private sector as a whole and has a policy of encouraging the private sector for further investment.
Chamber of Commerce President Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal said the government is ready to resolve all existing economic problems. “We raised issues such as the inability to increase credit flow, declining confidence in the private sector, stagnant investment, money piling up in banks, industries operating at less than half capacity, and the continuous decline of the stock market,” he said. “The Prime Minister listened to all our concerns attentively. He also asked for suggestions to resolve each issue. The Prime Minister is very positive toward the private sector.”
At the meeting with the Prime Minister, two office bearers including the president from each of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Confederation of Nepalese Industries, and Chamber of Commerce were present.
