It is customary to celebrate Paddy Day on Asad 15 and eat curd and chiura. It is also the day when the maximum consumption of curd is done throughout the year. A group of organic farmers from Phulbari, Bharatpur Metropolitan City-15, organized various activities on Monday morning on the occasion of the 23rd Paddy Day. After training farmers and playing in the mud, the participants ate curd and chiura.
Organizer Chandra Prasad Adhikari said that he brought 25 kg of curd from the dairy and fed the participants curd and chiura. Omnath Pandey, the owner of Someshwor Milk Dairy in Madi Basantapur, southern part of Chitwan, used to sell around 100 liters of curd daily at other times. He said that he had arranged 1,000 liters of curd for Asad 15.
‘Asad 15 is the day when the maximum consumption of curd is done in the year.’ For today, we had prepared milk three or four days ago and kept it in the refrigerator,' said Pandey. Not only during Paddy Day programs organized by groups and organizations, but also in households these days, it is customary to eat curd and chiura. That is why the demand for curd will be high on this day, he said.
The dairy of Ganganagar Dairy Producers Cooperative in Pahitani sold 19,000 liters of curd on Asad 15. At other times, chairman Krishna Prasad Sapkoto said that around 2,000 liters of curd are sold daily. Ganganagar's production reaches Gorkha, Tanahun and Nawalparasi. In Chitwan, the curd produced by dairy industries is usually available in half-liter plastic packets. The market price of which is 70 rupees.
Nepal Dairy Association Central Chairman Pralhad Dahal says that Asad 15 is the day when curd is consumed the most. ‘The amount of yogurt consumed across the country on Asar 15 is not consumed at any other time. The time when a lot of yogurt is consumed at once is during Teej and Dashain,’ said Chairman Dahal.
He said that up to 7.5 million liters of yogurt will be consumed across the country on Asar 15 in a single day. Chairman Dahal says that 1.5 million liters of yogurt are consumed on other normal days. ‘Dairy is also prepared for Asar 15 from powdered milk made during times of high production. We will start increasing yogurt production from next week,’ said Chairman Dahal. He said that the yogurt consumed on Asar 15 will be met by domestic production. He said that yogurt alone will be sold worth one billion rupees on this day.
He said that yogurt consumption is very high in major urban areas on Asar 15. He said that this has had a positive impact on the dairy industry and milk farmers as the custom of eating yogurt and curd has spread from the place of planting to the doorstep. Dahal said that even though it has been 23 years since the celebration of National Rice Day began across the country, the consumption of yogurt has increased significantly in the last five to seven years.
