India has provided water to the Gandak Canal 5 days ahead of schedule as per the Nepal-India agreement this year. India usually releases water from Ashad 15. This year, water has been flowing towards Nepal since Ashad 10, according to the Narayani Irrigation Management Office.
According to Engineer Suresh Sah, Information Officer of the office, although 850 cusecs of water should be provided towards Nepal as per the agreement, 857 cusecs of water is currently flowing. 'This year, India has provided more water than the agreement,' he said, 'Farmers have been relieved as water has come ahead of schedule.'
According to Sah, water has now reached blocks 1 and 2 of the canal. After water reached the canals from Pokhariya to West Murali, Hariharpur and Kalikamai areas, farmers there have started planting paddy. "Since water reaches those areas early every year, farmers prepare paddy beds accordingly," said Sah. This year, the office expects that paddy planting will be completed on time across the Gandak Canal Command area as water is available on time and in sufficient quantity. The Gandak Canal is divided into 15 blocks. But due to less water every year and lack of maintenance of the canal, water does not reach the last 2 blocks towards Rautahat.
