The heat has increased in India, including the Terai. People from the Terai and India to escape the heat are leaving Pokhara via the hilly district of Palpa.
More than 1,500 vehicles carrying Indian tourists are entering Nepal daily through the Belahiya (Sunauli) border crossing. 'We only arrived at the Bhairahawa and Belahiya border crossings yesterday,' said Laxman Subedi, president of the Hotel Association of Pokhara, in an interaction organized in Tansen on Monday. 'More than 1,500 vehicles with Indian number plates are entering Nepal daily. Some travel agencies have even been found sending vehicles with Nepali number plates.'
Vehicles entering from the Belahiya border crossing are going to Pokhara via Palpa (Siddharth Highway). In an interaction organized by the Hotel Association Pokhara in Tansen, Palpa under the 'Let's Go Pokhara' campaign, Subedi said that if only 200 vehicles of those Indian tourists can stay in Palpa for one night, it will be of great help in tourism promotion. 'The heat has increased in India,' he said, 'That is why Indians have reached Pokhara as well as the hilly districts of Nepal to beat the heat. We should create an environment where some of them can stay in Palpa for at least one night.'
He urged the Hotel Association Palpa to work to connect Palpa and the tourist capital Pokhara. He stressed that Tansen Municipality and the private sector should take the initiative for tourism infrastructure. 'Recently, the publicity being done on social media has benefited the entire hotel business of Palpa as well as Pokhara,' he said, 'Compared to the past, hotel occupancy has increased more than expected.'
In recent years, Pokhara's hoteliers have also started understanding the behavior of Indian travelers. He said that if the hoteliers here also pay attention to such issues, some of them could be stopped in Palpa. He said that Palpa is a suitable place as Indians entering Nepal through the Belhiya border prefer to roam in the mountains during the summer. He said that more Indian tourists visit Tansen and Ranimahal in Butwal, Palpa.
Gokul Mahajan from Uttar Pradesh, India, who stayed at the Tansen Hotel in Srinagar, said that he came to visit Tansen because of the mountain views he saw on social media. 'I didn't know that there were so many beautiful places nearby.' He said that it was very fun to come to Tansen for the first time.' He said that he learned a lot after his friends went and posted them on Facebook, Instagram, and Reels. Tourists have increased this year due to social media promotion, increasing heat in India, and the activity of tourism organizations.
Tansen Mayor Santosh Lal Shrestha said that tourism infrastructure work is progressing slowly in Tansen. He said that tourists are reaching places such as the management of the Tansen Palpa Durbar Museum complex, the foot trail to Srinagar, Ranimahal, Rurukshetra, Bhairavsthan, etc. ‘We have prepared for infrastructure development,’ he said, ‘We also need the support of the private sector in this.’ He said that just as Pokhara started the Jaun Hai Pokhara campaign, Tansen has planned to reach the border cities of India next year and launch the ‘Jaun Hai Palpa Tansen’ campaign.
Speaking at an interaction organized by the Hotel Association Pokhara under the Jaun Hai Pokhara campaign from Chitwan to western Nepal from Asad 20, he said, ‘Discussions with Palpali tourism entrepreneurs as well as the municipal executive have yielded lessons in tourism promotion.’
Parbati Pandey, secretary of the Hotel Association Pokhara, said that Bhairahawa and Palpa are also included in the three-day campaign. Maniraj Lamichhane, head of Nepal Tourism Board Gandaki Province Pokhara, said that the program organized to promote domestic tourism will help in sustainable tourism development.
He said that the impact of similar campaigns in the past has been positive, so he has been continuing it. ‘The main objective is to connect Chitwan, Bhairahawa (Lumbini) and Palpa (Tansen) with the tourist capital Pokhara by expanding air and land connectivity,’ he said. ‘The discussions held in the past about the Silver Tangle i.e. triangular tourism promotion campaign connecting Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini had been positive.’
He said that the concept of Silver Tangle can also be equally helpful for promoting domestic tourism. In the interaction, representatives from the Palpa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Palpa Trade Association, Travel and Tours, hoteliers, and municipal representatives said that connecting Palpa and Pokhara through tourism would benefit both places.
