The Nepal Freight Forwarders Association has stated that it has drawn serious attention to the recent complex situation in tea exports and the procedural obstacles seen in the Indian market.

The association's statement stated that the production, sales, distribution and export chain of the Nepali tea industry has been affected due to the prolonged detention of prepared tea exported from Nepal in the name of laboratory testing and various technical procedures by the Indian side. Due to this, tea industries, especially in the eastern region of Nepal, have started closing down and hundreds of tea gardens have been affected.

There are about 120 tea industries across Nepal, thousands of farmers and about 50 to 60 thousand workers are directly related to the employment of them. The statement states that the halt in the activities of this sector has a negative impact on Nepal's export trade, foreign exchange earnings and the overall economy.

The association stated that such obstacles created in the Indian market have adversely affected not only tea industry and exporters but also the overall Nepali economy.

Highly appreciating the contribution of the tea sector in Nepal's export promotion and trade facilitation, the association has urged for immediate diplomatic initiatives to make this issue a high priority. It has been urged to take necessary initiatives to make trade easy, simple and unhindered by removing the procedural and technical obstacles in Nepali tea exports through high-level dialogue with the relevant Indian bodies as soon as possible.
