Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Acting Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha has said that he is positive about allowing the private sector to enter the electricity trade and construction of transmission lines. Shrestha also said at the 24th general meeting of the Independent Power Producers Association of Nepal (IPPAN) that the private sector has a large contribution to the current total installed capacity. “The contribution made by the private sector in production is very commendable,” he said. “While the installed capacity is around 4500 MW, the NEA has only around 600 MW.” He stressed that the private sector should be allowed to enter the trade and construction of transmission lines in the coming days. He also said that the role of the private sector will be important in achieving the government’s target of exporting 15,000 MW. Shrestha said that the private sector, which has been moving forward for energy development, has been hampered by various forest issues and that the Energy Minister should take the initiative to resolve the forest problems. Stating that the construction of transmission lines is still challenging, he said that transmission lines should be built in collaboration with the private sector.
