Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has said that the government will now be tough on the tendency to make various excuses without proceeding with the construction work.
At the 24th general meeting of IPPAN, Energy Minister Shrestha said that the government is committed to providing opportunities to real investors, but despite adopting a private sector-friendly policy, there is a need to be strict on good governance.
He clarified that the government will take necessary steps to discourage the tendency to sit on projects and make various excuses without going ahead with the construction. 'The tendency to sit on projects and not go ahead with the construction will not be tolerated anymore,' he said.
According to Minister Shrestha, this step will help end the 'license raj' seen in the energy sector and control the tendency to occupy projects. He said that the government's objective is to encourage real investors and accelerate project implementation.
He informed that the government has paved the way for private sector participation in energy trade and transmission lines, prioritized the construction of substations, and adopted a policy of liberalization in energy trade.
He also said that preparations are underway to encourage the private sector in reservoir projects and to arrange for loan flow at fixed interest rates in the hydropower sector.
