UML MP Pushparaj Kandel has said that Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle cannot defend his mistakes by pointing out the weaknesses of the previous governments.

In a meeting of the Finance Committee under the House of Representatives, Kandel expressed dissatisfaction with the Finance Minister's tendency to repeatedly blame the previous governments and finance ministers. He said that the government that has come with an agenda of good governance and reform should not repeat the weaknesses of the past.

'The Honorable Finance Minister has repeatedly raised the issue that the previous finance ministers changed tax rates or systems in 73 places, and that corruption occurred.' The issue of corruption seems to be constantly coming up in his statements. But he himself was involved in important state bodies in the past. He is a person who has also been the Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, has participated in various policy processes for a long time and is also directly involved in the budget preparation process. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to try to send a message that it is completely separate from all the shortcomings of the past,' he said. Kandel also said that if the new government has come with an agenda of good governance, transparency and reform, it should not repeat the shortcomings of the past. 'Even if the previous ones made mistakes, no one has the right to make mistakes now based on that. The government should give a clear answer on why the error occurred this time. We do not have the basis to say that the Finance Minister has bad intentions. His intentions may be pure. But the conclusion that all the people in the past were corrupt and all the problems were caused by corruption is also not correct. If that argument was wrong yesterday, it is still wrong today,' he said. In the committee meeting, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle expressed his anger saying that a technical error had to be corrected in the budget and that the opposition had made it a big issue. Kandel also raised questions about the Value Added Tax system in the meeting. Recalling that Nepal's tax administration has been rejecting the multi-rate VAT system for the past, he questioned whether there has been sufficient study, debate, and preparation on the issue of moving towards a multi-rate VAT system.
