The Sirsia Dry Port in Birgunj has received the highest number of container-carrying railway racks in the month of Baisakh of the current fiscal year. The port has set a new record with 92 container-carrying railway racks entering from third countries through various sea ports in India in a single month.

According to Kamal Gyawali, head of the Intermodal Transport Development Committee, Birgunj, such a large number of container-carrying railway racks had not been entered in any month since its establishment. According to him, the data for Baisakh indicates a significant increase in imports from third countries.

'This is the first time that 92 container-carrying railway racks have been entered in a single month since the port came into operation,' Gyawali said, 'This shows the expansion of import trade and the increasing attraction of businessmen towards railways.' According to the committee's data, 92 container-carrying railway racks, two BRN racks carrying iron-based materials, six BCN racks carrying barge cargo, and 14 Box N Racks carrying coal and gypsum entered the port in the month of Baisakh.

In the previous month of Chaitra, 83 container-carrying, five BRN, 14 BCN, and 21 Box N Railway Racks entered the port. Compared to Chaitra, the number of container-carrying racks has increased by nine in Baisakh.

Every year, before the budget is made public, importers tend to import goods by assessing the possible increase in taxes and excise duties. It is estimated that this is also why the pressure of imports may have increased in the month of Baisakh. Most of the goods imported from third countries in Nepal arrive by rail via Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam ports in India to Sirsia Dry Port. Especially alcohol, electrical and electronic materials, ready-made garments, industrial raw materials and various consumer goods are imported through this route.

Hari Gautam, President of Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says that the attraction towards railways has been continuously increasing in recent years as compared to road transportation, it costs less, saves time and the safety of goods is also comparatively higher. Especially, industries and commercial establishments that import in large quantities have started giving priority to rail transportation.

Sirsia Dry Port is known as the main domestic container terminal of Nepal. A large part of the country's total third country trade is done through this port. The increase in container arrivals in recent months is also seen as a sign that the country's import trade expansion and economic activities are gradually becoming dynamic.
