Marriott International's luxury brands Ritz-Carlton and Westin Hotels are set to enter Nepal. Marriott International Inc. has signed an agreement with Chaudhary Group's hospitality wing 'CG Hospitality Global' to provide services under two brands.
The Ritz-Carlton will be operated in Kathmandu's Kantipath and the Westin Hotel will be operated in Lalitpur's Kupandol (the former location of Hotel Summit). According to Amritman Shakya, chairman of IEG, a group of Nepali investors involved in the construction of these hotels, at least 13 billion rupees are being invested in both hotels. These hotels will provide employment to at least 2,000 people.
According to the agreement, CG Hospitality has stated that it is targeted to bring these two hotels (Westin and Ritz-Carlton) into operation by 2028 and 2031 respectively. This strategic agreement was witnessed by the top and regional leadership of Marriott International Inc. and Chaudhary Group. David Marriott, president of Marriott International, which operates 9,900 hotels worldwide, has described its presence in Nepal as important.
‘Every new hotel creates an opportunity. It provides opportunities for the development of our employees. It creates opportunities for hotel owners and investors. It contributes to the expansion of the tourism sector. In addition, it provides an excellent experience for the guests who come to those hotels,’ he said. As Marriott approaches its 100th anniversary, it is even more special to be present in the city of Kathmandu, rich in history, culture, heritage and hospitality.
‘We are pleased to further strengthen our relationship with the Chaudhary Group with a shared vision of bringing world-class hospitality experiences to these markets with high potential,’ said Rajiv Menon, president of Asia Pacific, Marriott International. ‘These landmark projects will reflect the unique standards and excellence of Marriott International’s luxury and premium portfolio. They will also make a significant contribution to promoting tourism in Nepal, local employment and regional economic development. We are confident that these hotels will be established as the best destinations in the region, with the strength of Chaudhary Group's strong market experience and long-term commitment to Nepal.'
Ritz-Carlton is an ultra-luxury brand. Located in Kathmandu's Kantipath, this hotel aims to attract high-class tourists and business guests. It will have a total of 150 well-appointed rooms, including 30 large suites. Five restaurants and bars of different flavors and styles, an outdoor swimming pool, a modern fitness center and the signature 'The Ritz-Carlton Spa' will be put into operation. It is also said that there will be a state-of-the-art conference center spread over an area of more than 1,100 square meters for corporate meetings and social events. Chairman Shakya said that this hotel will be built between the current Election Commission and the Barahi Hotel entering Thamel. The hotel will be located on an area of 9 ropanis.
The Westin Kathmandu is being built in Bakhundol, where the former Summit Hotel was located. The hotel is said to have 150 premium rooms and suites with Westin brand signature wellness programming. Other amenities will include three restaurants, a fitness studio, the signature ‘Heavenly Spa by Westin’ and a rooftop swimming pool. It is said to have a meeting and banquet hall of more than 700 square meters with natural light and smart technology for meetings/conferences. Its area is about 7 ropanis, Shakya said.
Sunday’s agreement announcement is said to be another important link in the rapidly growing business partnership between Marriott and CG Hospitality. Apart from Nepal, CG said that this collaboration has also achieved great success in other markets in South Asia and the Middle East. Under this collaboration, ‘The Farm at San Benito, Autograph Collection’ has already been launched in the Philippines. Similarly, the launch of major projects such as ‘JW Marriott Residences at Dubai Islands’ in Dubai and ‘JW Marriott Hotel Siliguri Matigada’ in India was announced at the ceremony.
Both companies plan to expand their collaboration to a broader area through the ‘Series by Marriott’ brand to explore opportunities in emerging and high-growth markets globally. “Partnering with Marriott International is an exciting new chapter in our journey to take the hospitality sector in South Asia to new heights,” said Rahul Chaudhary, CEO and Managing Director of CG Hospitality Global. “These projects in Kathmandu bring together Marriott’s world-class luxury brand and CG Hospitality’s deep market experience and commitment to sustainable development. CG Hospitality is fully committed to building world-class infrastructure in its home country, Nepal, and taking the country’s tourism industry to the next level.’
CG Hospitality Global, the hospitality wing of the Chaudhary Group, currently manages over 220 hotels and resorts in 130 destinations across 12 countries, with over 13,835 rooms. Through its commercial partnerships with world-renowned brands such as IHCL (Taj), Jetwing, Hilton and Fairmont, CG Hospitality aims to grow its network to over 600 hotels and 30,000 rooms by 2030.
In addition, its Indian management company, ‘Concept Hospitality/Fern Hotels’, plans to expand its mid-market to luxury hotels to 500 by 2031 through ‘Fern Series by Marriott’. Marriott International, headquartered in Maryland, USA, has a network of world-renowned brands in the luxury, premium and mid-range categories. According to the latest data, its portfolio includes more than 9,900 hotels and residential structures in 146 countries and territories around the world. The company operates and franchises hotels, residences and timeshare facilities worldwide through its renowned travel platform Marriott Bonvoy. At the
ceremony, CG Group Chairman Vinod Chaudhary described the signing of the agreement as a personally emotional and proud moment. ‘If we look back at our hospitality journey, it has been a journey of about 28 years,’ recalled Chairman Chaudhary. ‘In 1998, we had planned to open a hotel in Nepal. However, due to some technical reasons, it was not possible. At that time, we were advised to go to Sri Lanka. At that time, Sri Lanka was going through a difficult phase of the civil war. That year, there was even an attack on its planes.’ But he said that the journey taught him a lot.
He recalled that the collaboration with the Taj Group enriched the experience. ‘Fate took another turn. Two years ago, a meeting with Rajiv Menon and his vision, strong decision-making ability and confidence brought us back to the journey of partnership with Marriott,’ Chaudhary told the story of the partnership with Marriott. But stating that the process of this agreement was not easy, he said, ‘There were many challenges. But in the end, we succeeded. Today I am very happy.’
Marriott Chairman David Marriott called the presence of his company in Nepal a matter of great honor. Praising Nepal, he said, ‘My wife is not very happy that I came to Nepal alone. So, someday we will both come to Nepal together.’ Before joining the agreement with the Chaudhary Group in Solti, he participated in the under-construction hotel tour in front of Aloft in Thamel and Narayanhiti in Shesh Ghale. Hotels are being operated in Nepal under the Marriott, Fairfield, and Aloft Moxy brands of Marriott International.
