Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja (Nimsadai) has claimed to have broken his own world record by climbing Everest and Lhotse without oxygen in the shortest time (summit time). He climbed Everest on 2083 Jestha 13 at 2:20 pm and Lhotse on 24 at 4:02 am.
According to the initial details given by Purja to Kantipur on Tuesday, he has set a new record by climbing the peaks of Everest and Lhotse without oxygen in 13 hours, 42 minutes and 17 seconds. According to Thaneshwor Guragain, General Manager of Seven Summit Treks and researcher of Himalayan statistics, he had previously set a world record in 2022 by climbing Everest and Lhotse without oxygen in 25 hours and 1 minute. This time, Purja has improved his old record by a significant margin.
According to Guragain, along with the Everest climb, Purja has completed his 55th successful climb on mountains higher than 8,000 meters as of Tuesday. Of which, 52 have climbed 55 real summits (up to the peak) and three (not true summits) near the peak. Out of these, 27 have been completed without the use of artificial oxygen.
This time, changing the planned plan due to adverse weather, 28 members under his leadership also successfully climbed Everest in the afternoon and Lhotse the next morning. Purja has said that since climbing is his profession, he will continue for a few more years.
He is currently preparing to climb Makalu and Kanchenjunga. After completing his Nepal expeditions, he plans to head to Pakistan's Ketu Himal on June 10.
Born in the Dhaulagiri region of Myagdi, Purja grew up in Chitwan. Before entering mountaineering, he was a member of the British Gurkha Army. He joined the Gurkha Army at the age of 18 in 2003 and served for 6 years in the Gurkhas and 10 years in the British Special Boat Service (SBS) out of his 16 years in the military.
Purja, who entered mountaineering after his military career, has achieved extraordinary success in the world of mountaineering in a short time. Through various record-breaking climbs and high-mountain rescue missions, he has taken Nepal to new heights in the international mountaineering world.
Purja's new record, 13 hours, 42 minutes and 17 seconds of climbing Everest and Lhotse without oxygen, will be registered as a new world record only after it is officially verified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
