Nine local levels have received grants to increase the production of drought- or flood-tolerant rice and wheat seeds to reduce the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector. The National Nature Conservation Fund (NTNC) has provided grants to the municipalities of Chitwan, Makawanpur and Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East).

Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City and Manahari Rural Municipality of Makawanpur, Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Chitwan, as well as Rapti, Khairhani, Ratnanagar and Madi Municipalities and Kawasoti and Madhyabindu Municipalities of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) have received grants.

A grant agreement was signed between NTNC and the heads and representatives of the municipalities at a program organized in Sauraha on Monday. NTNC has operated the Gandaki Watershed Climate Resilient Project.

NTNC Member Secretary Chirinjivi Pokharel said that although there are 19 districts from the upper reaches of the Gandaki watershed to the Terai region, grants have been provided to nine municipalities in three districts for the time being. Bharatpur Metropolitan City has received the highest grant of Rs 60 million.

Ratnanagar Municipality has received a grant of Rs 43,31,250 and Rapti Municipality has received a grant of Rs 54,000. The remaining six municipalities have received a grant of Rs 54,71,250. This amount will be used to produce seeds on 150 hectares of land and distribute them to farmers.

Paddy, wheat and some municipalities will produce mustard seeds along with these two crops. 'We will provide certified varieties of seeds developed by the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) and make them produce them.' NTNC Member Secretary Pokharel said.

NTNC's Climate Program Chief Manish Raj Pandey said that the rising temperature has adversely affected the agricultural sector and appropriate seeds are needed to mitigate its impact. 'Working together with the local level for farmers seems to create a common understanding about the effects of climate change. Solutions will also be implemented effectively,' said Pandey.

Khairhani Municipality Mayor Shashi Khaniya said that since agriculture involves seeds, irrigation facilities, effective pest control measures, and fertilizers, a plan should be made that covers all issues.
