Petroleum products worth Rs 181.7 billion have been imported through Birgunj, the country's main fuel import point, by the end of Baisakh of the current fiscal year. In the last 10 months, this huge amount has been exported from the country through the import of diesel, petrol, LPG gas, aviation fuel and kerosene.
According to the data of the Birgunj Customs Office, the value of fuel imports has increased by Rs 25.54 billion this year compared to the same period of the last fiscal year. Fuel worth Rs 156.17 billion was imported by Baisakh of the last fiscal year.
Diesel is still the most imported fuel in terms of import volume. By Baisakh of the current fiscal year, 895,246 kiloliters of diesel have been imported, worth Rs 157 billion. In the same period of the last fiscal year, 9857 kiloliters of diesel were imported, resulting in an outflow of Rs 79.57 billion. Although the quantity has decreased, the price seems to be high.
Imports of petrol have increased. Till April 2019, 390,615 kiloliters of petrol have been imported, worth Rs 35.79 billion. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, 367,344 kiloliters of petrol worth Rs 31.71 billion were imported. Imports of LPG, which is used as cooking gas, have decreased. Till April 2019, 242.7 million kilos of LPG gas have been imported, costing Rs 25.54 billion. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, 264.1 million kilos of LPG were imported, costing Rs 30.28 billion.
With the expansion of air transport, imports of aviation fuel have been increasing. Till April 2019, 160,000 kiloliters of aviation fuel have been imported, worth Rs 18.43 billion. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, 153,000 kiloliters of aviation fuel worth Rs 13.88 billion was imported.
As the use of kerosene has gradually decreased, its import has also decreased. By April of the current fiscal year, 4,200 kiloliters of kerosene had been imported, costing Rs 370 million. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, 6,100 kiloliters of kerosene had been imported, costing Rs 550 million.
