The Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel will be operational from next Shrawan, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has said. Presenting the budget for the fiscal year 2083/84 on Friday, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle said that the tunnel will be operational soon.

The construction work of the tunnel has been 98 percent completed. The project has stated that training of 150 people for tunnel operation is currently underway.

The construction of the tunnel began on 4 Kartik 2076. According to this, the work should be completed within 42 months from the start of construction. However, despite repeated extensions, the work has not been completed. The main tunnel is 2,688 meters long and the emergency tunnel is 2,557 meters long.

The contract for the construction of the tunnel has been awarded to the Japanese company Hazma Endo Corporation. Japan has a concessional loan of 16 billion and the Government of Nepal has invested 6 billion rupees in the construction of the tunnel. Although the document with the preparation for additional loan of about 5.5 billion rupees has reached the Ministry of Finance, its process has not been completed. The deadline for the construction of the tunnel is 12 Baisakh 2083.
