The salaries of government employees have been increased after 4 years. On Friday, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle announced that the salaries of employees have been increased while presenting the budget for the fiscal year 083/84. Finance Minister Wagle said that the overall salaries of employees will increase by up to 21 percent.

Finance Minister Wagle said during his budget speech, 'I have increased the salaries of the employees by 10 percent in the starting scale while continuing the dearness allowance that they are currently receiving. I have made arrangements for a monthly incentive allowance of 10 percent of the new salary scale to start the performance-based remuneration system. This will result in a net increase of about 21 percent in the current remuneration, and the minimum remuneration including grades will be around Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 100,000.' The new scale will be implemented from 1st July 2083.

Finance Minister Wagle said that the basic salary has been increased by 10 percent while maintaining the dearness allowance.  Finance Minister Wagle also said that the minimum salary of government employees will be 40 thousand. The budget statement also mentions that the salary of higher-level employees will be more than 100,000 rupees.

During the budget speech, Finance Minister Wagle said, 'The salary of civil servants has not increased for the last 4 years. During this period, the price increase based on the consumer price index has been 17.3 percent and I feel that the remuneration facilities need to be reviewed for a dignified life.'

The government has not increased the salary of employees for the last 4 years. The government last increased the salary of employees by 15 percent in the fiscal year 079/80.

As per the provisions of the law, the government should increase the salary of employees every two years. Accordingly, although the salary of employees should be increased from the current year's budget, it has not been increased. The government had formed a committee to study the salary hike of employees under the coordination of Chief Secretary Suman Raj Aryal. The committee submitted its report last week.

The report has recommended setting the minimum salary of employees at 35,000 and the maximum at 121,000. Currently, the salary of an office assistant is around 24,000 and that of the Chief Secretary is around 77,000 rupees.
