Three Nepali tourism entrepreneurs have been elected to the international umbrella organization of national organizations related to mountaineering, climbing and mountain activities around the world.

According to the Nepal Mountaineering Association in Naxal, according to the International Mountaineering and Hiking Federation (UIAA) in Switzerland, Nepali entrepreneur Rajendra Bahadur Lama has been elected as a full member of the UIAA board, while Ishwari Poudel and Gokul Thapa have been elected as commission members. All three entrepreneurs are office bearers of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

UIAA Mountaineering Commission Chairman Greg Mosley has informed that Lama has been approved as a full member of the UIAA board from the spring meeting of 2026.

He said that Gokul Thapa has been elected as a mountaineering commission member and Ishwari Poudel as a mountain protection commission member.

The UIAA, known in French as the ‘Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme’, was founded in 1932. Its main objective is to promote safe, responsible and sustainable mountaineering.

This organization is particularly responsible for setting mountaineering safety standards, determining international standards for climbing equipment, etc.

A ‘full member’ of the UIAA, i.e. an active member, is a national mountaineering or climbing federation of a country, which represents its country and has full voting rights in the UIAA.

The main difference between a ‘full member’ and a ‘commission member’ of the UIAA is based on institutional and personal roles. A ‘full member’ is an organization with voting rights as the official federation of a country, while a ‘commission member’ is an individual selected for technical and thematic work.
