Pasangdawa (Padawa) Sherpa, 49, from Pangboche in Solukhumbu, climbed Mount Everest for the 30th time on Monday, becoming the second person to climb Mount Everest the most. The mountain guide Padawa, affiliated with Kathmandu-based Tag Nepal Expedition Pvt. Ltd., reached the summit on Monday morning with a team of foreign and Nepali climbers, the company said.
According to Sagar Kumar Poudel, the company's operator, Padawa is also preparing to climb Mount Everest again this season. 'He is descending from the base camp today. Discussions are underway to climb again,' Poudel told Kantipur.
If he successfully climbs again this season, he will come close to the world record of Kami Rita Sherpa, who has climbed Mount Everest 32 times.
Padawa first climbed Everest in 2055, while Kami Rita first climbed Everest in 2051. Padawa climbed Everest twice in the same season last year, completing his 28th and 29th ascents. Meanwhile, Kami Rita broke her own world record by climbing Everest for the 32nd time on Jestha 3. According to an operator of Seven Summit Treks, which he is affiliated with, Kami Rita is currently at the base camp and has not decided whether to climb again or return to Kathmandu. 'Perhaps he is also watching Pasangdawa's decision,' the operator said.
The highest record of climbing Everest in Nepal's mountain tourism was set by Appa Sherpa for the first time by climbing 21 times. It was equaled by Phurbatasi Sherpa. Kami Rita had climbed Everest for the 21st time in 2074 BS and had been continuously protecting her own record since then.
Kami Rita on Everest for the 32nd time, breaking her own record
Since then, the competition for the most ascents between these two Sherpa guides has been intensifying. Kami Rita is a familiar face in the international media. She is often seen speaking publicly about mountain tourism, climate change and the role of the Sherpa community. Padava, on the other hand, keeps a relatively quiet and low-profile. He does not like to publicly discuss his records. The snow of Everest now binds these two climbers in the story of a single race. And, the race is not over yet.
