The land purchased for the establishment of the Nepali Embassy in Sri Lanka has been sold to private individuals twice. According to the Auditor General's report, one acre of land has been sold to private individuals twice by May 9, 1994.
'This year, during a search of the government agency managing real estate in Sri Lanka, one acre of land in the name of the Government of Nepal has been sold to private individuals twice by May 9, 1994,' the report said. 'The said land should be brought under the ownership of the Government of Nepal and preserved and utilized.'
The Auditor General also said that each office should maintain records of government houses and land. 1.5 acres of land was purchased for US $ 360,000 on May 18, 1989 to establish the Nepali Embassy in Rajagiriya, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The report states that the land is currently unused.
‘This year, a budget of 3 million rupees was allocated to build a compound wall on the land, but the mission has not spent the amount, citing the lack of clarity regarding the ownership of the land,’ the report states. ‘According to the Sri Lankan government valuation, the current value of the land is approximately 6.5 million US dollars, but the official land ownership certificate of the land has not been received yet.’
