Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. Vice President for Corporate Affairs Ravi KC has said that the government's detention of businessmen is wrong.
"No businessman works for loss. He works for profit, if there is a policy that prevents businesses from moving here and there, then there is no need to imprison the businessman," he said while speaking at the first session titled 'Permanent Policy to Accelerate the Private Sector' at the Kantipur Economic Summit 2026. "I don't think it is a crime to say that tax management is a crime or even if it is a crime, he should be imprisoned." He said that if he takes money out and invests and only does business here and has no basis in Nepal, he can be investigated to see if he can flee.
He also said that such an act would discourage entrepreneurs while they are on their way to a developed country. 'It doesn't matter if someone who has been in business for three generations and employed 1,200 people is detained for a month and a half, but it creates an atmosphere of fear in their social reputation, the way society views them, the way children see them, and the enthusiasm of entrepreneurs,' he said. 'As we move from an underdeveloped country to a developed country, such an act discourages entrepreneurs.'
'For any nation to develop, the economy cannot be developed unless there is a partnership between the government and the private sector,' he said. 'The government is only an intermediary. Whatever development work needs to be done, it should be done by the private sector. Therefore, I think that imprisoning private sector entrepreneurs will do more harm than good to the state.' He said that there is a risk of eroding the enthusiasm of the government that is currently formed with high enthusiasm to work. He said, 'The state cannot do industry and business.' This is a job for the people or businessmen. The government, as a guardian, should take the lead in this.'
