The closed taxiway ‘Eco’ at Tribhuvan International Airport has been restored since Thursday after its reconstruction.

Taxiway (E) Eco has been brought back into operation after the structural improvements made under the Parallel Taxiway Connection Expansion Project of Tribhuvan International Airport with the help of a loan from the Asian Development Bank, said Dipendra Shrestha, Head of the Airport Capacity Enhancement Project.

According to him, Taxiway Eco was closed from December 1, 2025, for construction work in the area up to Taxiway ‘D’. With the completion of the reconstruction, it is expected that the ground movement of aircraft, i.e. movement to the parking area after landing and the runway access process before takeoff will be more convenient, safe and organized.

The main objective of the project is to increase the operational capacity of the airport by expanding the parallel taxiway towards Runway 02. It is believed that this improvement will reduce delays in aircraft movement, increase runway utilization efficiency and help in crowd management.

According to international aviation standards, the parallel taxiway system is considered an important infrastructure for airport operations, which directly affects flight safety as well as time management. During the implementation of the project, the supply of bitumen was affected due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and challenges were seen in the management of construction materials. However, despite these difficulties, the project has been progressed according to the set goals.

The completion and commissioning of the project under such circumstances is said to be a significant achievement of project management, technical coordination and field-level implementation capacity.

The construction of the project is being carried out by the Chinese construction company Gansu Mechanized Engineering Construction Corporation.

This project, which is being carried out under the long-term capacity enhancement plan of Tribhuvan International Airport, is expected to make a positive contribution to the operational efficiency, security level, and parking and taxiing management of the airport. Kathmandu Airport handles about 100 international and about 300 domestic flights daily.
