There is a lot of activity at the dry port construction site in Dodhara Chandani Municipality-1 across the Mahakali River. As the construction work of various structures of the dry port is in full swing, the movement of transportation vehicles and the busyness of workers in the area have increased the activity.
Work is being done in the area even in the hot sun of Baisakh. From installing fences to the construction of other structures of the port, construction work is underway. Currently, construction work of administrative buildings, warehouses, customs, security, quarantine houses and load-unload sheds is going on simultaneously in the area.
‘The construction of physical infrastructure is going on from now on,’ said Tej Bahadur Chand, a representative of the Indian company Compt Construction, which has been awarded the contract for the construction of the dry port. ‘The work on the dry port has been going on regularly for the past three months.’ According to him, the construction company is currently working at a rapid pace with the goal of completing the construction within 24 months.
The Indian construction company Compt Construction has been awarded the contract for the dry port, which is being built with the assistance of the Indian government, for Rs 2.4 billion. The contract agreement was signed in Shrawan last year to complete the work within three years. The Intermodal Transport Development Committee had handed over the site for construction in Shrawan itself. Since then, the work of cleaning and leveling the area has started. ‘The work on the dry port is currently underway,’ said Anish KC, engineer of the Intermodal Transport Development Committee, ‘Work on the wall, housing area and necessary physical infrastructure is underway.’ According to him, work on the construction of a bridge on the Malaria Nallah is also underway. The physical progress of the dry port construction has exceeded 8 percent. The construction work is being monitored by India’s RITES Limited. The Intermodal Transport Development Committee is facilitating the work.
The company has brought all the construction materials and equipment from India for the construction of the port. 42.36 hectares of land in the Gaurishankar Community Forest in Dodhara Chandni Municipality-1 has been cleared for the construction of the dry port. 1,702 trees in the forest were cut down. Currently, structures are being constructed on only 25.3 hectares.
A four-lane concrete bridge over the Mahakali River and an 8-kilometer, six-lane access road from Gaddachauki, the last point of the East-West Highway, to Malaria Nala have been constructed for the construction of the dry port. After the construction of the port, commercial activity is expected to increase in the area. On the Indian side, an access road is also being constructed from the Jogbuda area of the national highway to the dry port.
