Birgunj, the country's main fuel import point, has imported fuel worth Rs 148.16 billion more than the previous fiscal year. This year, despite a decrease in the import of cooking gas and kerosene, the cost of fuel import has increased instead of decreasing.
According to the data of the Birgunj Customs Office, by the end of the previous fiscal year, fuel worth Rs 140.10 billion was imported through this border, generating a revenue of Rs 57.53 billion. By the end of the current fiscal year, fuel worth Rs 148.16 billion was imported through this border, generating a revenue of Rs 60.38 billion. According to the data, by the end of the previous fiscal year, 798,000 kiloliters of diesel worth Rs 71.19 billion were imported through this border, while 80,087,000 kiloliters of diesel worth Rs 78.79 billion were imported during the same period of the current fiscal year. As of Chaitra last fiscal year, 326 thousand kiloliters of petrol worth 28.41 billion rupees were imported through this checkpoint, while in the same period of the current fiscal year, 359 thousand kiloliters of petrol worth 31.8 billion rupees were imported.
As of Chaitra last fiscal year, 238.2 million kilos of LP gas worth 27.34 billion rupees were imported through this checkpoint, while in the same period of the current fiscal year, 224.8 million kilos of LP gas worth 23.33 billion rupees were imported through this checkpoint.
As of Chaitra last fiscal year, 138 thousand kiloliters of aviation fuel worth 12.59 billion rupees were imported through this checkpoint, while in the same period of the current fiscal year, 141 thousand kiloliters of aviation fuel worth 14.4 billion rupees were imported. While 5,160 kiloliters of kerosene worth Rs 470 million were imported through this checkpoint by Chaitra of the last fiscal year, 4,200 kiloliters of kerosene worth Rs 370 million have been imported by Chaitra of the current fiscal year. As the use of rural and alternative energy increases, its consumption seems to be decreasing.
Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Hari Gautam says that unless alternative sources of fuel are identified and their use is encouraged and the use of electric vehicles is increased, a large amount of money will continue to be lost from fuel imports every year. ‘This is also a matter of serious concern,’ he said. ‘While the developed countries of the world have greatly increased the use of alternative energy and electric vehicles, it is not a good sign that we are still limited to the fuel era.’
