The Department of Transport Management is going to take action if electric vehicles charge more than the fares charged by passengers. The department issued a public notice on Tuesday, stating that although diesel-powered vehicles can charge increased fares as per the automatic fare adjustment system, this rule will not apply to electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles will face action if they overcharge passengers ‘According to the notice published by the department on 25 Chaitra, due to the increase in the price of biofuels at the international level, the fares of inter-provincial public vehicles have been adjusted as per the automatic fare adjustment system,’ the issued notice said, ‘According to which, the increase in the fares of passenger and freight public vehicles has been made only in the case of public vehicles using diesel engines, but the said fare increase will not be applicable to electric vehicles.’ The department stated that it has received complaints that some transport service providers using electric vehicles have charged increased fares while transporting passengers and have not even given tickets to passengers.

‘Therefore, since the existing fare for electric vehicles remains the same and the transport service provider has a provision to mandatorily provide the passenger ticket paid by the passenger, it is requested to do/have it done accordingly,’ the issued notice states. ‘If any violation of the aforementioned provision is found, action will be taken as per the Vehicle and Transport Management Act 2049, the Vehicle and Transport Management Regulations 2054 and other prevailing laws.’
