The Nepal Banana Producers Federation Ad Hoc Committee has demanded a minimum support price for bananas.

The committee has demanded a minimum support price for bananas by controlling the excessive price increase in the market even though the price has not increased in the farmers' fields.

The committee organized a press conference on Tuesday and clarified that even though the retail price of bananas in the market has reached 350-400 rupees per kg, farmers have been getting only 70 to 85 rupees.

The committee has accused middlemen of interfering in the market while both consumers and farmers are suffering. It has suggested that the government should intervene immediately to monitor the market and control the minimum price. The committee says that if the government does not intervene in the market, the country, which is moving towards banana self-sufficiency, will again have to rely on imports.

The committee has also demanded to make market access effective, determine the minimum support price of bananas, make the agricultural insurance system simple, fast and effective, arrange quality tissue culture plants, make simple supply of chemical fertilizers, and make the agricultural insurance system simple, fast and effective.

The committee expects the state to take a concrete decision immediately, saying that if the farmers are strong, the nation will be strong, according to a statement issued by its chairman, Bishnu Hari Pant.
