The Emergency Response Team (ERT) formed under the coordination of the Foreign Secretary has recommended the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security to open new work permits in the Gulf region. New work permits were stopped in the Gulf region after the US, Israel-Iran war broke out in West Asia.
The Emergency Response Team meeting held on Monday under the chairmanship of Foreign Secretary Amrit Rai recommended the Ministry of Labor to open new work permits, saying that the tense situation in West Asia is easing. The government had formed the ERT under the chairmanship of the Foreign Secretary to take necessary decisions for Nepalis according to the situation in West Asia.
After the US-Iran war broke out, the Ministry of Labor had stopped issuing new work permits and renewals in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Israel and Turkey, which are major employment destinations for Nepalis. However, even though the Ministry of Labor decided to renew the work permits for Nepalis who were on leave to return, no new work permits were issued.
After the suspension of labor permits, the Nepali embassy has also been banned from certifying demand letters. The Ministry of Labor has stated that the process of opening a new labor permit that was suspended has moved forward.
