The government is preparing a strategy for electricity consumption. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha said that the government is preparing such a strategy to increase electricity consumption and replace petroleum product imports.
Minister Shrestha gave this information in a meeting with a team from the Confederation of Nepalese Industries. The Confederation team led by Confederation President Birendra Raj Pandey met Minister Shrestha on Monday and discussed the development of the energy sector.
Chairman Pandey had emphasized the need to adopt a policy to increase electricity consumption. He suggested implementing a policy to allow industries to generate the required energy and transmit it at a green-billing charge, and adopting a policy to allow the private sector to trade domestically and internationally in electricity.
He urged that all projects that have completed surveys and are yet to sign power purchase agreements (PPAs) should immediately sign, adopt a policy to increase domestic electricity consumption, and provide incentives to replace fossil fuel-based industries with electricity-based equipment. He also emphasized the need to pay attention to alternative energy sources.
On the occasion, Minister Shrestha said that he is committed to moving forward in collaboration with the private sector for the development of the overall energy sector.
Minister Shrestha said that the government is also doing homework on how to increase domestic consumption along with electricity exports. ‘The government has given high priority to the strategy of increasing reservoirs and renewable energy, electricity consumption,’ he said, ‘We expect clear suggestions from the private sector on how the energy sector can increase its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP).’
The discussion was attended by Vice-Chairman Gokul Bhandari of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries, Office-bearer Bidushi Rana, Chairman of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries Youth Entrepreneurs Forum Manish Shrestha, Director General Ghanshyam Ojha, among others.
