The import of motorcycles has increased through the country's main border, Birgunj Customs Post. Compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year, the import of unassembled, fully assembled and electric motorcycles has increased.

The data of the Birgunj Customs Office shows that the import of unassembled motorcycles and electric motorcycles has increased. According to the data, there has been a significant increase in both the volume and revenue of unassembled motorcycles until Falgun of the current fiscal year. Not only the import of such motorcycles, but also the value and customs revenue have increased by double digits compared to the previous year.

Various motorcycle manufacturing companies have established their plants in Nepal and have been manufacturing motorcycles in Nepal by importing parts. Until Falgun of the previous fiscal year, 32,911 unassembled motorcycles worth Rs 4.3 billion were imported through this post. From which a revenue of Rs 4.10 billion was collected. During the same period of the current fiscal year, 40,786 motorcycles worth Rs 5.71 billion were imported through this checkpoint. From which a revenue of Rs 5.71 billion was collected. Similarly, the import of assembled motorcycles is also seen on the rise. In the last fiscal year, 2,818 finished motorcycles worth Rs 270 million were imported through this checkpoint till Falgun. From which a revenue of Rs 340 million was collected. During the same period of the current fiscal year, 5,347 finished motorcycles worth Rs 550 million were imported through this checkpoint. From which a revenue of Rs 690 million was collected.

In the last fiscal year, 3,374 electric motorcycles worth Rs 440 million were imported through this checkpoint till Falgun. From which a revenue of Rs 140 million was collected. During the same period of the current fiscal year, 6,128 electric motorcycles worth Rs 800 million have been imported through this checkpoint. From which, Rs 800 million in revenue has been collected.

Hari Gautam, president of the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says that the demand for motorcycles is increasing due to cheapness, convenience, and the increasing purchasing power of the middle class. He said that with the expansion of the industry assembled in Nepal, there is a possibility of further increase in the import of unassembled motorcycles. Gautam says that since the increase in the import of vehicles will increase the trade deficit, measures should be adopted to replace it.

Uday Bahadur Bista, information officer at the Birgunj Customs Office, said that the import of electric vehicles has increased in the past few years. He said that while other electric vehicles are mostly imported from China, motorcycles are imported more from India.
