Sudama Gupta of Pratappur Rural Municipality-9 in West Nawalparasi has not yet received the price of the sugarcane he sold two years ago.
Gupta, who sold sugarcane to Indira Sugar Mill on credit last year, has repeatedly approached the industry, municipality and administration for payment. Although he did not receive payment in the year he sold it, he was confident that he would receive payment in the current year. However, since the industry that was supposed to pay the money did not come into operation this year, he is in a dilemma that both his hard work and investment will go to waste.
Gupta's family alone is due to receive more than one million rupees from Indira Sugar Mill. 'They sought loans and started farming, sold it to the industry on credit, and have to wait in this way when they receive payment,' said Gupta. 'They took the farmers' sugarcane on credit and sold it to the industry on credit, and when they received payment, the operators closed the industry and fled, but the hard work and investment of hundreds of farmers are about to sink. The government should focus on solving the problems of farmers. Like Gupta, hundreds of farmers in West Nawalparasi have not received payment for sugarcane sales for two years. Indira Sugar Mill in Pratappur Rural Municipality-8 has not even brought the industry into operation without paying the farmers' dues.
After the farmers complained to Pratappur Rural Municipality that the industry was not paying on time, the municipality immediately wrote to the farmer to pay the farmers' dues, but the industry has not listened to the demand.
Pratappur Rural Municipality Chairman and Lumbini Province Sugarcane Producer Farmers' Committee Chairman Umesh Chandra Yadav said that while other sugar industries in the district have gradually paid the farmers, Indira Sugar Mill has not paid more than Rs 60 million. ‘Indira Sugar Mill has not paid the farmers’ money for two years,’ said Yadav, ‘We have repeatedly written to them and drawn their attention to start the payment immediately. The industry has been reluctant. The problem arose when the operator was not in touch.’
Although the industry paid 60 million out of the 120 million rupees it was supposed to pay in the previous fiscal year, 60 million rupees are still to be paid. After not receiving payment for a long time and the industry itself was closed, the farmers had requested the District Administration Office to take the initiative for payment.
The District Administration Office has written to the Industry Department to take action against the industry operator Rakesh Agrawal, said Assistant Chief District Officer of West Nawalparasi, Poshan Raj Bhandari. "It was found that farmers have not been paid for sugarcane purchased for a long time and the industry has also not been operational," Bhandari said. "A letter has been sent to the Department of Industries to create the necessary environment for the payment of farmers' money." In the district, Lumbini, Bagmati Khadsari and Tattva Pharma Pvt. Ltd. have crushed sugarcane this year, but Indira Sugar Mill has not come into operation.
