Two groups have formed panels to contest the general assembly of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry to be held on 29 and 30 Chaitra and for the new leadership. The current senior vice president Anjan Shrestha will automatically become the president from the general assembly. Elections will be held for the remaining office bearers. The two groups have announced their candidacies for the same election.

About a month ago (11 Falgun), Hemraj Dhakal had already announced his candidacy for the post of senior vice president of the federation. Another group also announced its candidacy on Monday. Shiva Prasad Ghimire's panel has been supported by current senior vice president Anjan Shrestha. The banner of the candidacy announcement meeting held at the Radisson Hotel in Kathmandu on Monday was 'Officer and executive member announcement program of the future president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Anjan Shrestha group'. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that this group has the support of the future president Shrestha.

At the program, Ghimire announced his candidacy for the vice-president position, Prabal Jung Pandey for the vice-president position for the associate position, and Dilsunder Shrestha and Krishna Prasad Sharma for the vice-president position for the district/city. However, this panel has not announced the candidacy for the senior vice-president and female vice-president positions.

Ghimire announced his panel for the vice-president position on Monday. Ghimire made public a group with 16 members. Ghimire, an established businessman in the energy and LP gas sectors, said that he has assembled an inclusive team by incorporating various sectors of industry and trade in his group. ‘Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the post of substantive vice-president of the federation due to the dream of prosperity that I have seen for years and the trust of my business friends. This has filled me with new enthusiasm in my mind with the determination to make it a real power center,’ Ghimire said, ‘Today, the federation is at a crucial juncture. The private sector is the backbone of the economy. But our voice in policy making is weak. Now it is time to make the federation powerful.’

Pandey, the candidate for the post of associate vice-president, also includes industrialists and businessmen from various sectors in his election team. Pandey claims that his group has formed an ‘inclusive and balanced’ team. His team includes Abhaya Malla, Ambika Prasad Poudel, Babukaji Karki, Hemant Golchha, Ishwar GC, Juna Mathema, Krishnalal Maharjan, Manoj Poudel, Nicholas Pandey, Priyaraj Regmi, Rajesh Kumar Agrawal, Rishi Agrawal, RS Bhandari, Shaktikumar Begani, Sushil Thapa, Suyosh Pyakurel and Ujjwal Shrestha.

Hemraj Dhakal's group, which announced its candidacy for the post of senior vice-president of the federation about a month ago, includes Jyotsna Shrestha as vice-president, Kalpana Gaire and Umesh Dalmiya as district vice-president, Naresh Lal Shrestha as substantive vice-president and Kamala Shrestha as women's vice-president. This group has not yet announced its executive members.

At the announcement program on Monday, Federation President Chandra Prasad Dhakal urged for a unanimous leadership to be selected in the upcoming elections to strengthen the voice of the private sector. He stressed on understanding, saying that the panel-based division in the elections will weaken the private sector. He said that the country is currently in the process of forming a two-thirds permanent government and at such a time, the private sector should be united. He believes that the government will listen only if it raises its voice together.

Former president of the Federation, Bhawani Rana, also said that private sector entrepreneurs should move forward in a unified manner. She said that the government will listen to the voice of the private sector and give importance only if there is unity among the entrepreneurs.
