The 27th Flora Expo-2082, organized by the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN), has begun at Bhrikutimandap from Thursday. The exhibition, which began with the main slogan 'Floral business for clean environment, employment and economic prosperity', will be held for four days.
Stating that flower entrepreneurs have suffered huge losses due to the recent storm, FAN President Rajesh Bhakta Shrestha urged the government to effectively implement the insurance system to reduce the risk of such natural disasters.
He said that some entrepreneurs could not participate in this year's exhibition due to the storm. He said that insurance, policy reforms and expansion of modern technology are indispensable for the sustainable development of the flower sector.
Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr. Rajendra Prasad Mishra said that the flower business is a potential sector for economic growth and that it will create employment and also have a positive impact on the mental health of the citizens. He mentioned that the role of greenery and flowers is important in reducing mental stress increasing with urbanization.
Bagmati Province Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Madhusudan Poudel said that the provincial government is committed to making the flower business technology-friendly and competitive. He informed that the budget has been allocated for the smart flower business and the necessary procedures are in the process of approval by the Ministry of Finance. Minister Poudel pointed out the need to emphasize on technology use, product improvement and efficiency enhancement as the flower business now has to compete not only in the domestic but also in the international market.
The exhibition is expected to attract more than 60,000 visitors and generate a turnover of more than Rs 12 million. There are 83 stalls at the fair, including commercial, competitive, food and landscape stalls.
Seasonal flowers, ornamental plants, cut flowers, goldsmiths, compost, agricultural tools and modern flower farming technology are being displayed and sold at the exhibition. In addition, the organizer has stated that a production competition has also been organized in various categories.
The flower business started in 2011 and has currently expanded to 52 districts. More than 1,235 businesses are involved in the flower business, which is spread over an area of about 270 hectares. So far, there has been an investment of more than 8.83 billion rupees.
Shrestha said that more than 53,000 people have been directly and indirectly employed. He said that despite the annual increase in demand of 10 to 15 percent, domestic production has not been able to fully meet the demand.
