Cardamom worth Rs 8.61 billion has been exported in the first seven months of the current fiscal year (Shrawan-Magh). According to the Customs Department, India is the only market for cardamom produced in the country.

According to the department, 41,53,150 kg of cardamom have been exported. Compared to the seven months of the last fiscal year, cardamom exports have increased by 37.13 percent in volume and 59.54 percent in value during the same period of the current fiscal year. According to the Cardamom Development Center (FIKKAL), cardamom cultivation, which started in the eastern hills of Nepal, has spread to more than 54 districts. It is said that more than three-quarters of the area under cardamom is in 12 districts of Koshi Province and the rest is in districts of other provinces.

More than 95 percent of the production in Nepal is exported to India and only 5 percent is consumed in the country. Businessmen say that the price of cardamom is fluctuating. The average price of cardamom per gram was Rs 70,000 in 2078 and 2079.

In 2080, the average price had decreased to Rs 47,500. From 2081 Baisakh to Kartik, it decreased to 35 thousand, and from Mangsir to Falgun, it increased to 110 thousand rupees in Chaitra. In 2082 Baisakh, the price of cardamom per man was 100 thousand rupees and in Jestha-Asar, it was 88 thousand rupees. Farmers complain that due to the lack of stable price of cardamom, farmers have to sell at a high price some years and at a low price some years.

Similarly, cardamom farmers have been facing problems such as shortage of manpower, decrease in the area of cardamom plantations due to diseases and pests, low selling price, lack of collection centers at the farmer level, and lack of storage facilities. They say that it is a challenge to attract youth to cardamom farming and to retain youth in the country.

According to the Nepal Cardamom Entrepreneurs Federation, the area of cardamom plantations decreases every year due to diseases and pests. Cardamom worth Rs 7.94 billion was exported in the last fiscal year 081/82 and Rs 7.68 billion in 081/82.
