The final study report of the Kathmandu-Kerung railway is expected to be released by the end of Ashar. After completing the on-site study, the Chinese technical team is finalizing it. The Chinese technical team, which came to Nepal in December 2079 to study the feasibility of the railway, completed the first phase of the study in the first week of Magh 2080. The second phase of the study was completed by the end of Chaitra 2081.
The technical team of the 'China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group' has conducted the study in Nepal. Although the time limit was set at 42 months, the study work was completed 15 months ahead of that. The study team was given time until Asad 2083. Since it will take time to finalize the report even after the study, time has been given until Asad.
Feasibility study includes many things, the study will determine whether the project will be implemented or not: Bodh Bhandari Information Officer, Railway Department As the study is completed, the final study report will be released within that time, said Bodh Bhandari, Information Officer of the Railway Department. 'The field level study has been completed,' he said, 'The Chinese team has gone there and is preparing a report, and the final report will be released by Asad.' According to him, the time, cost and distance required for construction will be determined from the final report.
‘The final report will be submitted by Chinese technicians to the Chinese government and us together,’ said Bhandari, ‘This is a feasibility study, it includes many things, the study will determine whether the project will be implemented or not.’ Bhandari said that this study will be conducted in a way that will allow the project to be implemented. The feasibility study was conducted in Kathmandu, Nuwakot and Rasuwa, the districts touched by the railway. Soil was extracted by drilling in the three districts during the study. A potential location where the railway would touch was selected and samples of soil, stone, water and rock were collected from there and some were taken to Nepal and some to China for testing.
The feasibility study will also determine how many tunnels, bridges and stations are required on the railway. After the final report is prepared, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared and the construction work will be taken forward. The Chinese team was assisted in the study by a team of engineers from the Railway Department.
The initial estimate is that it will cost Rs 271.368 billion to build the railway. According to the initial study, the distance from Rasuwagadhi to Kathmandu will be 72 km. The pre-feasibility study of this railway was conducted in Mangsir 2075. Then, in Asoj 2076, it was agreed to start the feasibility study during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal.
A memorandum of understanding was signed in Chaitra 2078 during the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Nepal. Only preliminary issues were included in the pre-feasibility study and now the actual distance, tunnel, cost, bridge height, station and other issues will be finalized. This study was conducted with the technical and financial assistance of the Chinese government.
The final report of the Raxaul-Kathmandu railway has not yet been released
The final report of the Raxaul-Kathmandu railway has not yet been finalized. The Konkan Railway Corporation of India is preparing its final report, the Railway Department has said. Bhandari said that the study report has been sent with the points that need to be added. Konkan had conducted a field survey for 22 months and submitted the report to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport in Ashad 2080. After reviewing the report, it was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in late Baisakh 2081.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs again sent it back to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure asking it to clarify some issues in the report. Then in Ashad 2081, the final report was sent to the Indian Embassy through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Although it was sent again with additions, the final report has not yet arrived. The initial study report was sent to clarify how the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhesh Fast Track (Fast Track) and Nijgadh International Airport would be connected by railway and where the station would be located.
Krishnaraj Pantha, Head of the Infrastructure Construction and Transport Division of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, said that after the final report comes, we will know how to move forward. According to the survey report conducted by Konkan, the construction of the railway will cost Rs 400 million. This is the amount excluding compensation.
It is estimated that an additional Rs 7 billion will be required for compensation. According to the final survey, its distance will be 140.79 km. It will have 32 tunnels of 42 km in total. The survey report mentions that 124 large bridges and 12 stations will be built. The current distance starts from 4 km in Raxaul on the Indian side and goes to Khokana in Lalitpur.
