This year, 500,000 rose sticks have been consumed during the Valentine's Day week. The Nepal Floriculture Association (FAN) has stated that the consumption of roses has increased by 17.65 percent compared to last year. This year's Valentine's Day week began on Magh 25 and ended on Falgun 2.
FAN stated that 500,000 rose sticks were consumed this year, out of an estimated 450,000 rose sticks. FAN's general secretary Hiramani Sharma said that roses worth more than Rs 70 million were bought and sold during the Valentine's Day week.
He said that 60 percent of the market demand was consumed in the Kathmandu Valley and 40 percent in the outer main cities. FAN stated that 30 percent of the domestic production of roses and 70 percent were imported.
Sharma said that this year, roses were bought and sold for Rs 120 to Rs 160 per stick. He said that the increase in both demand and price has increased the enthusiasm of the businessmen.
Fan stated that initiatives are needed to increase the domestic production of roses in the coming years and replace imports.
