As Nepal Telecom celebrated its 22nd anniversary on Thursday, all three employee organizations of the company held a silent protest with placards and banners.
The Nepal Telecom National Employees' Organization, Nepal Telecom Workers' Union and Nepal National Employees' Organization jointly protested with banners and placards reading 'We are in injustice: our voice for justice'.
The statement mentioned that the employee unions had earlier submitted a letter of attention to the management on 16 Poush 2082 and 20 Magh 2082. However, they say that they had to launch a pressure-based demonstration when those demands were not addressed.
The main dissatisfaction of the employees is the contraction in career development due to the Employee Regulations 2078, the compulsion to work in the same position for a long time for 13-14 years, and the lack of assurance of promotion. In addition, they have objected to the fact that the dearness allowance decided by the government and the bonuses and incentives approved by the general meeting have not been distributed. The employees have called this situation unfair and have demanded that the benefits received be implemented immediately to keep the morale of the employees high and increase productivity.
Stating that there are serious flaws in the management side, the employees have protested the delay in introducing the new billing system, the poor performance of major projects like 4G and FTTH and the tendency of not completing them on time .
Regarding the silent protest by the employee unions at the ceremony and their demands, Lok Bahadur Katuwal, employee representative of the telecom's board of directors, said that the board of directors has taken the attention letter submitted by the employees seriously . He admitted that due to the lack of amendment to the employee regulations, employees have to wait for 13 to 14 years in the same position and are not promoted even for 15-20 years, and informed that the board of directors is discussing options such as restructuring the company and matching posts to resolve this .
'The board of directors will also soon find a solution to the issue of bonuses, incentive allowances and other financial benefits that have been pending for a long time,' he said, 'I urge the employees to work for the progress of the organization as the service facilities of the employees should be viewed in connection with the financial condition, profit and quality of service of the organization.'
Laxmi Kumari Basnet, Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Chairperson of the Telecom Board of Directors, said that the contribution of the employees who work day and night to ensure continuity of the company's service delivery cannot be forgotten and it is necessary to motivate them appropriately. She assured that the Board of Directors and the company management will pay special attention to the demands raised by the employee unions in the coming days.
