If the work on the Nagdhunga-Malekhu road along the Prithvi Highway had been carried out as per the agreement, it should have been completed by now.
But after only 37 percent of the work was completed in three years as per the agreement, the project has been extended by 6 months.
The road contract was signed on 15th Poush 2079 to be completed in three years. The bids for the Muglin-Nagdhunga section were invited in three phases. The deadline for the third phase expired on 15th Poush and the deadline has been extended for 6 months.
According to Vijay Darai, engineer of the Muglin-Malekhu road, western section of the Nagdhunga-Muglin road project, the construction company has been extended by 183 days due to the fact that the design data was incorrect and the road mapping was different.
The construction company has been stating that the construction could not be completed on time due to delays in clearing the road work site, failure to move trees and poles on time, inability to easily obtain construction materials, and high traffic volume. Darai said that although the time has been extended for the mapping issue, other issues are still under discussion.
Only 37.5 percent of the work has been completed on the section so far. According to Darai, a little more than nine kilometers of blacktop has been completed. Blacktop is being done in the Charaudi area of Dhading. Preparations for blacktop are being made in areas including Fisling.
Work is being done on various areas of the road including drains, barriers, bridges. According to him, around 150 workers are working daily. He said that the construction company has been asked to expedite the work by facilitating the project and completing it within the extended time.
The section covers 38.86 kilometers of road. Two.2 kilometers of this section will be made six-lane. Which falls in the Malekhu, Benighat and Muglin sections. The seven.2 kilometers of the road will be four-lane.
Stating that the four-lane road will fall in the Ramala Danda, Kurintar, Fisling, Chumling, Majhimtar, Charaudi and Bishaltar areas, Darai said that a three-lane ‘climbing’ road will be built in the uphill and downhill sections. According to him, the ‘climbing’ road will be 2.3 km long, while the rest of the road will be two-lane.
Sharma-ZICG has won the contract for the upgradation of this section at a cost of Rs 4.80 billion 5.9 billion. Along with blacktop, various works such as construction of drains, construction of structures to prevent landslides, cutting walls, laying walls, and road safety are still pending in various areas of the road. This road is being built with the assistance of the World Bank. This section is the main entry and exit point of Kathmandu.
