An interaction program on mountaineering tourism was held on Sunday to expand Nepal-Canada relations, discussing the various dimensions between Nepal and Canada.

Commemorating the 61st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the participating speakers discussed the efforts to be made at the government and private levels to further strengthen the relationship between Nepal and Canada. Diplomatic relations were formally established between Nepal and Canada in 1965.

Everest climber Lakpa Dorji Sherpa was honored at a program organized by the Nepal-Canada Friendship Cultural Association in the capital. The Sherpa was honored at the program by the organizing association's president Niroj Maskey, former chancellor of Nepal Academy Ganga Prasad Upreti, patrons of the association, foreign policy expert and former ambassador of Nepal to Canada Hiranyalal Shrestha, former ambassador Kali Prasad Pokharel, and others.

Ang Tshering Sherpa, advisor to the Nepal-Canada Friendship Cultural Association, presented a working paper on the relationship between Nepal and Canada at the program. He presented a working paper on the relationship between the two countries and tourism and mountaineering.

Vice President of Nepal-Canada Friendship Cultural Association Prof. Dr. Gopal Pokharel explained the content of the program. Devesh Dhungana, a member of Nepal-Canada Friendship Cultural Association, discussed the economic, cultural, and tourism relations between the two countries.

Former President of Nepal-Canada Friendship Cultural Association Engineer Keshav Kunwar thanked the new team of the association led by Maskey for being actively working.

President of Nepal-Canada Friendship Cultural Association Maskey reminded that the organization has been working in various fields such as cultural, social, economic, educational, and sports since its establishment to further strengthen the relations between the two countries.

She said, ‘There are some cultural similarities between us and Canada. We are also rich in Himalayan culture, Canada is also a country with Himalayan culture and civilization. In the coming days, we will work to plan and expand mutual relations between the people of the two countries.’

Former Chancellor Ganga Prasad Upreti emphasized that Canada and Nepal should work together on global social issues.

The honored Sherpa recalled the moment he first climbed Mount Everest with a Canadian. He climbed Mount Everest with Canadian Laurie Skreslet. Laurie is the first Canadian to climb the mountain. The association had earlier honored record-breaking ultra runner Mira Rai.
