The Department of Foreign Employment has issued a notice on Tuesday to issue work permits to Nepalis who have obtained official visas to Iraq.

The department has issued a notice to issue a labor permit in accordance with the decision of the Nepal Government Council of Ministers on December 11. The department has stated that labor permits will be issued in Nepal if the necessary documents are submitted upon return to Nepal. Workers interested in obtaining a labor permit will have to apply through the Foreign Employment Management System (FEMIS).

A passport with at least three months of validity remaining, an official visa for Iraq, a contract agreement with the employer, an arrival and departure stamp on the passport by immigration, orientation training, and proof of medical examination have been made mandatory for the application.

Similarly, the notice states that proof of depositing money in foreign life insurance, social security fund, and welfare fund through FEMIS must also be submitted.

It has been arranged that the person seeking labor permit himself must appear at the Foreign Employment Department for identification with his original passport, visa, and contract agreement.

Binod Shrestha, President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, Iraq, said that this government decision will help provide legal status to thousands of Nepali workers working in Iraq or returning from there. About 25,000 Nepalis are working in Iraq.
