650 units of electric vehicles (EVs) have been stored at the Chobhar dry port alone. The EVs, which have been inspected and cleared from the Tatopani dry ports in Rasuwa and Sindhupalchowk, have been stored at the Chobhar dry port after paying the fare.

Ashish Gajurel, executive director of the Nepal Intermodal Transport Development Committee, said that the daily rent of Rs 125 is payable for these vehicles kept at the port. ‘The structure built by the committee under the concept of a logistics hub has managed 650 units of EVs, and they are not parked,’ he said. ‘Companies have to pay Rs 125 per vehicle per day for keeping them here.’ According to the committee, 4 units are buses, 12 units are pickup vans and the rest are in private vehicle parking.’

On Jestha 15, businessmen imported a large number of vehicles due to the fear of increasing the tax on EVs through the budget for the current fiscal year. At that time, Gajurel said that 1,350 units of EVs were kept at the port alone. ‘Currently, the number of vehicles that pass inspection is very low, but the companies that have parked the vehicles are gradually taking them,’ he said. ‘In Jestha, there were 1,350 EVs, but now it has reduced to 650.’

While only EVs are parked in the four-wheeler parking lot, Gajural said that there are 400 units of petroleum vehicles in the two-wheeler parking lot. ‘There are 400 units of IC engine two-wheelers, in their case, the fee is determined according to the area occupied and the concerned company has to pay accordingly,’ he said, ‘In Chobhar, there is a facility to put a trade-related label along with customs clearance, and to park vehicles by paying rent, according to which the businessmen have parked EVs by paying rent.’

In the fiscal year 080/81, 15 percent customs duty was paid on EVs up to 50 kW. In 081/82, 5 percent excise duty was added on EVs up to 50 kW. In 080/81, 10 percent customs duty was charged on EVs between 51 and 100 kW, but in 081/82, customs and excise duty were increased by 5 percent each.

In the fiscal year 2081/82, EVs from 101 to 200 kW will be subject to 30 percent customs duty and 20 percent excise duty. In 080/81, only 10 percent customs duty was levied. Last year, customs duty and excise duty were 20 percent each. In the fiscal year 081/82, customs duty was increased by 20 percent from 2010 to 300 kW, while excise duty was reduced by 10 percent.

Last year, customs duty was 40 percent and excise duty was 45 percent. In the fiscal year 080/81, customs duty and excise duty were 60-60 percent on EVs above 301 kW. The government had increased customs duty by 20 percent on these vehicles in the fiscal year 080/81. The excise duty was reduced by 10 percent.
