Chandra Bhatta, a resident of Kichai, Krishnapur Municipality-4, who used to be busy with household chores, has changed her daily routine. She now works at home in the morning and evening and at a nearby paper factory during the day. In the factory, she does everything from sorting paper sheets, folding covers, and adjusting the size.

Bhatt has been working like this for a year. She finishes her housework in the morning and reaches the factory at 8 o'clock. She goes home for lunch in the afternoon and returns to the factory to work again and returns home only in the evening.

'An industry has opened near our house, we are learning the work in it and earning income,' Bhatt said, 'Since we are still in the learning stage, the salary is also low.' She earns 8,000 rupees a month. She manages her household expenses from that. Her husband Devraj is working abroad. Her children study in school.

Gomti Pant, who was once a popular volleyball player, is also currently working in the paper industry. She has studied up to B.Ed and says that she has been working in the paper industry for the past 6 months. 'Rather than sitting idle, we have found work near home, we are focused on this,' Pant said, 'Even if there is nothing, we have managed to meet our own and family expenses.'

She has also obtained a volleyball referee's license. She is invited to volleyball competitions held in the municipality. She also played the role of referee in the President's Running Shield. Sometimes she is invited to big competitions. She said that she takes leave from the paper industry after going to the referee's work.

Manmati Bhatta of Ward No. 5 of Krishnapur Municipality has also been working in the paper industry for a year. She works in the industry by learning to operate machines including sorting paper sheets, adjusting paper sizes, labeling, punching, cutting and packing.

‘We used to just mow the lawn at home, that would have been enough,’ said Manmati, ‘Now we are working in the industry along with the housework.’ She comes to the industry in the morning after preparing food for her children. Then she returns home for lunch. She gets 1 hour of rest in the afternoon. After that, she returns home only in the evening.

Narayan Dutta Joshi, a local from Krishnapur Municipality-5, started the Malikarjuna Kapi Industry about 5 years ago. This industry has taught skills to the women here and also provided employment. Now the women seem happy to have jobs close to home. Joshi says that more than 15 women are working in the industry.
