Wholesalers and retailers bid on tuna at a tuna auction at Tokyo's Toyosu Fish Market on Monday. A 243kg bluefin tuna sold for a record $3.2 million in the first auction of 2026.

 The fish was purchased by Kiyomura Corp., the operator of Japan's famous sushi restaurant chain Janmai. According to international media organizations, Japan's tuna market is worth about $2 billion. And it is estimated that it will grow to $2.5 billion within the next ten years. Photo: AP
