Nepal Remitters Association has honored Nawaraj Ghimire, a leading figure in the remittance sector. The award was presented on the occasion of the association's 20th anniversary and annual general meeting for his significant contribution to the development and formalization of Nepal's remittance sector.
The honoree is Ghimire, 92.
At a time when remittance transactions were mainly conducted through informal channels until 1996, Ghimire played a pioneering role in converting those transactions into a formal system, said Chandra Tandon, outgoing president of the Nepal Remitters Association. According to him, Ghimire had started a systematic remittance service through his company Annapurna Travel. This helped Nepalese working abroad to send money back to Nepal through a safe, transparent and reliable channel. This organization was later transformed and developed into ATT Remit Pvt. Ltd. and is currently operating under the regulation of Nepal Rastra Bank.
Speaking at the annual general meeting, Nepal Remitters Association President Ritesh Mittal said that Ghimire was honored for pioneering the formal remittance business about three decades ago. “Due to Ghimire’s visionary thinking, bold leadership and continuous dedication, today the Nepali remittance industry has developed institutionally and established itself as the country’s major foreign exchange earner,” he said.
The Nepal Remitters Association said Ghimire's vision, continuity and leadership laid the foundation for making Nepal's remittance system formal, secure and systematic. The statement said Ghimire's contribution played a significant role in financial inclusion and the national economy.
