As per the revised rates, fuel surcharge has been reduced on major trunk routes such as Kathmandu-Pokhara, Kathmandu-Biratnagar, Kathmandu-Bhairahawa, and Kathmandu-Nepalgunj.
Domestic air passengers are set to get some relief with the reduction in aviation fuel prices. The fuel surcharge on trunk, remote and inaccessible sector flights has been reduced after the Oil Corporation reduced the price of fuel from Rs 134 to Rs 128 per liter.
According to the revised rates, fuel surcharge has been reduced on major trunk routes like Kathmandu-Pokhara, Kathmandu-Biratnagar, Kathmandu-Bhairahawa and Kathmandu-Nepalgunj. The fuel surcharge on the Kathmandu-Pokhara route has been reduced from Rs 2,125 to Rs 2,030, while the Kathmandu-Biratnagar route has been reduced from Rs 3,215 to Rs 3,075.
Similarly, passengers from remote and inaccessible sectors will also benefit. Fuel surcharge has been reduced from Rs 40 to Rs 300 per passenger on flights like Kathmandu-Lukla, Biratnagar-Phaplu, Nepalgunj-Simikot and Dhangadhi-Bajura, depending on the flight time and aircraft used.
The revised fuel surcharge increases/decreases based on the flight cost of aircraft like Jetstream and ATR. Fuel surcharge is calculated on a per-seat per-minute basis based on fuel consumption and fuel cost. Based on that, the Airline Operators Association and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal adjust the fuel surcharge based on the formula set.
The new fuel surcharge rates will be effective from January 2, 2026. The previously applicable rates were in effect until December 31, 2025. According to air service providers and regulatory bodies, the rates have been adjusted according to changes in fuel prices in the international market. It is said that this will provide relief to passengers and help in making air service operations sustainable.
