Government agencies have sent 55 million SMS in four years. So far, 54.638 million SMS have been sent through the centralized SMS gateway system implemented by the Department of Information Technology since December 2078.

The department has stated that 149 government bodies are currently connected to it. An average of 13.66 million SMS are sent annually through the SMS gateway.

It is estimated that the government has saved about 710 million to 980 million rupees in revenue in four years by sending SMS through the gateway The SMS gateway charges 20 paisa per SMS including tax. This cost is much lower than that of private service providers. Those not connected to the gateway have to pay 1.5 to 2 rupees per SMS. When calculated based on this average rate, it can be estimated that the government has saved about 710 million to 980 million rupees in revenue in four years by sending SMS through the gateway. Prakash Dawadi, the department's information technology officer, said that the service is available at a low price, and government bodies have been able to send their information to many citizens at a low cost.

Around 1.3 million SMS are being exchanged monthly through the SMS gateway. The department has operated the gateway service in collaboration with both service providers, Nepal Telecom and Ncell. Regarding the agency that sent the most SMS, the technology department has stated that it was unable to 'filter' it due to a 'server hang'. 'It was not possible to filter those 55 million SMS,' said Information Technology Officer Dawadi, who is also the department's information officer. 'The system has not been prepared to view the data. There is a problem that the server keeps hanging when trying to filter the SMS data.'

Although the gateway system makes it easy to exchange information with citizens, there is a weakness in data management and server capacity within the technology department that operates the self-service. Currently, there is also a problem in the department's email system, said Information Officer Dawadi.

Earlier, agencies such as the Attorney General's Office, the Supreme Court, the Department of Transport Management, and the Department of Labor, which have direct contact with the public, were among those who sent the most SMS. Within two months of the service starting on 2018, the Attorney General's Office had sent around 10,000 messages.

The office used to send updates on cases to stakeholders via SMS. The office had said at the time that the number of people inquiring about their cases at the District Attorney's Office was increasing after an average of one and a half to two hundred messages were sent and received daily. There are a total of 97 offices, including 77 District Attorney's Offices, 18 High Attorney's Offices, and 1 Special Attorney's Office.

The department said that due to the effectiveness and reasonable price of this service, other government agencies are also showing interest in it and are contacting it to take advantage of the service. Department of Transport Management, Ministry of Labor, Employment and Transport, Hetauda and Basgadhi Municipality, Bardiya and other agencies have taken advantage of the SMS gateway service.

A centralized SMS gateway system is a facility for any government agency to send SMS to service recipients through SMS service providers (Nepal Telecom and Ncell) using the infrastructure (software) of the Technology Department. With this, government agencies can send information or data to their service recipients at a cheaper rate. The Technology Department believes that this will reduce government expenses. The department has brought the SMS gateway network into use in collaboration with Nepal Telecom and government agencies.
