The Birgunj branch of the Food Management and Trading Company Limited is going to distribute tokens to farmers from Tuesday for purchasing paddy this year. Munilal Kushwaha, information officer of the branch, said that this measure has been adopted so that farmers do not have to wait in line to sell paddy and that they can sell paddy in an organized manner.

He said that each farmer will be given a token of 35 to 40 quintals of paddy. ‘We have also set a limit for purchasing paddy from farmers so that interested farmers can sell paddy to the company,’ he said. ‘There is a provision that farmers must come with a recommendation from the agriculture branch of the concerned municipality to get the token.’ Kushwaha says that the center has given a quota of 10,000 quintals of paddy to the Birgunj branch this year. He said that the procurement started a little late this year as the farmers of this region have just brought in their paddy crop. Kushwaha says that the branch plans to purchase only Sona Mansuli paddy this year. The support price of Sona Mansuli paddy has been fixed by the federal government at Rs 3,628.33 per quintal this year, so the branch is also going to purchase at the same price.

Last year, the branch had received a quota of 42,000 quintals of paddy purchase. But after getting good prices from the private sector, they did not come to the branch to sell the targeted quantity of paddy. Last year, the branch's target was to purchase 32,000 quintals of Sona Mansuli and 10,000 quintals of cumin fine paddy. But although the quota for cumin fine paddy purchase is allocated every year, this year the focus will be on purchasing only Sona Mansuli paddy, he said.

Usually, the private sector starts purchasing paddy in this area before the food industry starts purchasing paddy. After the private sector starts paying more than the support price set by the government, farmers have been selling paddy to the private sector rather than the food industry.
