The Tatopani checkpoint and Kodari Highway, which have been blocked for eight days, have been reopened with an agreement reached on the 'Eco' landslide control in Kodari, Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-2 of the district.
The road blockade was lifted after the locals and the Road Division Office Charikot agreed to start the landslide control work within two months. Sindhupalchowk Chief District Officer Bandhu Prasad Bastola and Road Division Office Charikot Chief Narayan Dutta Bhandari had held separate talks with the locals on Thursday and Friday to pave the way for an agreement. The locals had blocked the road since 20 Mangsir as pressure to address their demands, saying that the settlement was at risk due to the eco-landslide.
After the blocked road was opened, the goods containers that were stopped at Khasa have started entering Nepal through Leaping. He said that an agreement was reached after the talks led by Ward Chairman Kumar Shrestha of Bhotekoshi-2 and the checkpoint has been operational on that basis. 'It has been agreed to start the construction within 60 days,' he said.
The Road Division Office has stated that Rs 484.9 million has been allocated by the Ministry of Finance for the eco-landslide control and a contract has been called. 'We will start the work within two months after signing the contract agreement,' said Division Chief Bhandari. He said that all necessary measures will be taken to protect the human settlement above the landslide. However, he clarified that it is difficult to take all the responsibilities at once due to the geographical remoteness.
Traders have expressed concern that apples inside containers stopped in Khasa have started rotting due to the road closure. Even if the road is opened, traders are still skeptical due to the uncertainty of whether cargo containers will pass regularly from the Chinese side.
Since there is an agreement to operate the International Kodari Highway while prioritizing local security, it is expected that construction will now begin and move towards a long-term solution.
