A government study report has shown that physical damage worth 84.5 billion rupees was caused during the Gen-G movement on 23 Bhadra and the vandalism, looting and arson on 24. The report points out that during the protests, public property, private businesses and institutions and commercial houses across the country suffered damage worth 84.4577 billion rupees.
The committee formed to assess the damage caused by the Gen-G movement and prepare a reconstruction plan for public infrastructure submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday.
Committee coordinator and National Planning Commission Secretary Ravilal Pantha also presented the summary of the report at the cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Thursday. The report states that 2,168 bodies and institutions were affected by the protests. Out of these, 2,671 buildings were damaged. The damage is estimated at Rs 39.31 billion 75 million.
The report states that 12,659 vehicles were damaged in the protests, causing a loss of Rs 12.93 billion 61 million. The report indicates that out of the total damage, Rs 44.93 billion 73 million was from the government and public sector, Rs 33.54 billion 87 million from the private sector, and Rs 5.97 billion 17 million from the community and other sectors. Of the total government damage, 68 percent was from the federal government, while 10 and 22 percent were from the provincial and local levels, respectively.
The committee has also submitted a reconstruction action plan. It is estimated that a budget of 36.3 billion 21 million rupees will be required for reconstruction. This committee was formed on 5 Ashoja under the coordination of the Secretary of the National Planning Commission after the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Nepal. The committee submitted its report in 75 days.
According to the committee, damage was caused in all seven provinces during the Gen-G movement. There are 54 districts and 262 local levels that will suffer such damage. According to the details collected by the same committee (Loss and Damage Assessment), an initial estimate of about 84.5 billion rupees was lost due to the movement across the country.
The private sector had stated that property worth 80 billion rupees was affected, and out of that, property worth 38 billion rupees was completely destroyed. Government officials had also estimated that the damage was about 100 billion rupees. However, the study report showed that the damage was about 16 billion less than the government estimate.
