The Nagdhunga-Malekhu road will not be closed during the UML general convention. The Road Department has stated that although the road will be closed for five hours daily from Wednesday to Poush 1 for blacktop work, the road will not be closed for two days on Mangsir 26 and 27.
A team of youth associations close to the UML had met Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Kulman Ghising on Wednesday and requested that the road be opened for two days for the general convention. Accordingly, Minister Ghising said that he would request the local administration and planning office to open the road for two days, the ministry said. Even though the road was opened for two days, the road would be closed for work after that, according to the current schedule, said Vijay Jaisi, director general of the department.
While the Nagdhunga-Muglin Road Planning Office was about to close the road as per the predetermined schedule, UML leader Mahesh Basnet had written a status on social media Facebook on Tuesday, accusing Minister Ghising of closing the road targeting the UML general convention. The next day, Minister Ghising requested the relevant bodies to open the road for two days.
The road was partially closed because the road section needed to be blacktopped and upgraded. The Road Department has given high priority to the blacktop work of the Nagdhunga-Piplamod section of the road, which falls within Kathmandu district.
Therefore, since the section is narrower than elsewhere and requires the mobilization of many heavy equipment and transportation vehicles at once, the work is being carried out by stopping vehicle traffic for some time, said Keshav Prasad Ojha, head of the eastern section of the Nagdhunga-Muglin Road Project.
