Construction work on MCA-Nepal's New Butwal Substation and 18-kilometer cross-border transmission line has begun at Sunwal-13 Surya Basti in West Nawalparasi. The project, which is being constructed under the MCC Nepal Compact Program, was jointly laid by Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal and US Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson on Wednesday.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal said that this project will take Nepal forward in the development of the energy sector in South Asia. ‘This project will greatly contribute to the development of Nepal’s energy trade and industrialization,’ Khanal said, ‘This is the largest development partnership between Nepal and the United States. It will help make Nepal economically strong in the long term.’

United States Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson emphasized that this collaboration between Nepal and the United States will contribute to Nepal’s economic and social development. MCA-Nepal Executive Director Khadga Bahadur Bista said that this project, being the largest in Nepal, will help Nepal in expanding its energy trade.

The 18-km transmission line will connect the 400 kV New Butwal Substation to the Nepal-India border. This infrastructure development, which is being built with an investment of about US $ 50 million, is expected to facilitate the implementation of the Energy Trade Agreement, which aims to export 10,000 MW of electricity within the next decade. The two-year project period has expired and all projects under the MCA must be completed within the next three years.
