As of last Kartik, the government's outstanding public debt has reached Rs 2729.41 billion. This is 44.69 percent of Nepal's gross domestic product (GDP).
As of last Ashad, the public debt was Rs 2674.4 billion. The public debt outstanding as of Kartik has increased slightly compared to last Asho. The public debt outstanding as of last Asho was Rs 272.65 billion.
The Public Debt Management Office has stated that the public debt is Rs 1275.96 billion (20.89 percent of GDP) and Rs 1453.45 billion (23.80 percent of GDP) of the internal public debt. The public debt outstanding as of mid-Kartik has increased by Rs 55.36 billion compared to mid-Ashad.
In the last four months, out of the Rs 138.75 billion, Rs 150.88 billion has been repaid. Out of the total amount repaid, Rs 127.61 billion has been spent on principal and the remaining Rs 23.27 billion on interest.
The amount used to pay interest on public debt is included in current expenditure. Therefore, the amount of Rs 138.75 billion raised during the period is reduced by Rs 127.61 billion spent on principal repayment. Adding Rs 44.22 billion due to changes in foreign exchange rates to the amount received, the public debt has increased by Rs 55.36 billion in the last two months.
