The government has approved guidelines for the design of structures made of bamboo. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has approved the guidelines for the design of structures made of bamboo, 2082.

The guidelines have paved the way for institutionalizing the engineering design and construction of one to two-story residential, small commercial and industrial buildings using bamboo as a structural construction material. Approved by the Ministry of Urban Development,  A circular will be issued to the local level through the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration to implement the guidelines.

Steel and concrete-based construction technology is expensive, has a negative impact on the environment, and due to limited access to construction materials in rural areas, the importance of cheap and environmentally friendly structures is increasing. Keeping this in mind, Minister Ghising said that the guidelines have emphasized on encouraging and promoting the use of bamboo, which has been traditionally used at the rural level, as a construction material.

He mentioned that locally available bamboo can be used for structural purposes, reducing dependence on materials such as bricks, cement and iron, and that  affordable structures can be constructed from it, enabling poor and below-poverty families to build sustainable homes.

The Ministry of Urban Development said that the guidelines have been prepared based on the facts, knowledge and standards obtained from studies and research on bamboo building design and construction technology at the international level.

The guidelines have set clear standards on topics such as bamboo harvesting, grading, chemical treatment, storage and use. A simple and easy design method and model house designs with necessary details have been included to build earthquake-resistant, environmentally friendly and cost-effective structures using bamboo.

During the preparation of the guidelines, necessary tests were conducted at the Institute of Engineering Studies Pulchowk and Thapathali Campuses, Nepal Department of Standards and Metrology, and Madan Bhandari University, along with urban development and building construction technicians.

Tirtharaj Bhattarai, the mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality in Khotang, had come to Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu and sat on a Satyagraha some time ago, demanding a policy-level arrangement for the overall promotion of bamboo construction.
